Autumn – Winter 2016 Interior Design Trends
The paddling pool is packed away, the kids are back in school, and the fancy spiced coffees have returned to the cafes once again; it can only mean one thing – autumn has arrived. Although it’s a shame to say goodbye to summer, autumn brings with it plenty of things to enjoy. Cosy jumpers and comfy warm boots, hearty root vegetable soups and stews, and of course, the new season’s trends.
If you want to bring your home up to date with the latest styles for autumn and winter 2016, get creative with some of these exciting new interior trends.
Indulgent comfort
Autumn is all about snuggling up and getting cosy as the nights draw in. Soft, natural materials like wool, suede and wood add a luxuriously tactile feel to any home. Whether you’re investing in a distressed leather sofa or simply updating your look with some squashy cushions, choose neutral shades of grey, brown and cream to really hit the trend.
Rattan is also big this season, which is a great excuse to make use of your garden furniture when you bring it inside over winter. Bring your rattan furniture into the new season by accessorising with cushions, throws or blankets. Large, chunky knits are in both on the catwalk and in the home, so wrap up warm with a throw or lay down a rug to tie any room in with the new season.
Vintage explorer
This is a trend that merges historic style and travel nostalgia. Create the impression that you’ve just returned from a round-the-world adventure with Phileas Fogg by adding some escapist style to your home. Frame vintage maps, place globes and old travel books where they will catch the eye, or collate other travel-related curios like old telescopes or compasses as a talking point.
Dust off your battered vintage suitcases, which can be stacked artfully to be used as storage, or even used as a table top. This is a trend that is easy to make personal to you – dig out your old school globe, or choose maps of places that you’ve visited to evoke nostalgia and bring back great memories.
Bring the fire
Gas fires are out, natural fires are back in. The ‘Scandi’ (Scandanavian) trend is here to stay, and that means keeping warm beside an open fire or a log burner. But knocking your fireplace through can be expensive, not to mention complicated, and having a ready stack of wood to keep things warm is a never-ending task.
If you’re not keen on shelling out for the real deal, create the impression of having an open fire by stacking logs beside your chimney stack, or use an ornate fireguard to obscure the view of your gas fire and add a stylish and homely touch to your living room. If yours is a fire-free household, create the look with a stack of candles instead. Not only will this add warmth to the room, but you can enjoy the delicious fragrances too.
