What Are the Benefits of Triple Glazing
Just when you thought picking out windows wasn’t hard enough already, along comes Triple Glazing.
Well if you’re feeling confused our guide should help you understand everything you need to know about this new system, and hopefully help you to make a decision on what’s best for your home.
We can talk about triple glazing until the cows come home and fit them beautifully, but it’s up to you to decide.
What’s Wrong with Double Glazing?
Now we’re not pointing any fingers here, but we get asked this a lot when talking about triple glazing, and suffice to say double glazing has done a good job getting us this far.
But the truth is, like with all good inventions there’s a new kid on the block, and some radical changes in the manufacturing process has meant that things have just got better.
Your house needs to perform consistently, and if you’ve spent time and money on insulating everything except your windows, we’re afraid to say it’s a half-hearted job.
Double glazing can create cold patches in your house, due to the higher insulation of the rest of the house.
You’ll be able to feel this when you get those slight drafts and decide to close the curtains to keep the heat in. We’ve all been there!
This is simply down to the differences in how your floors, walls and windows keep in the heat. To further understand this there’s a rating system that has been put in place to ensure your home is as energy efficient as possible.
It’s All about U Value
The energy efficiency of any window is rated by a U Value.
The lower the value, the better the efficiency, and whilst modern homes are now hitting an incredible 0.3 thanks to improvement with insulation, double glazing is still letting the team down with an average of 3.
With many vast improvements, building regulations now insist that any window installed should be at least 1.6.
As you can tell, compared to our walls, windows have a long way to go when it comes to energy efficiency. Right now they’re a weak point in your home for all of that unwanted condensation and cold air. But with triple glazing it takes this mission another step forward.
Changes in the way triple glazing is made has meant it out performs double glazing.
An optimum distance of 16mm is between the glass meaning wider cavities.
Low – emissivity coatings have been added to the glass to stop heat from escaping.
The cavity is now filled with an inert gas, such as argon.
It may not sound like much, but put these factors together and you’re looking at the Rolls Royce of windows.
Let’s Get Eco-Friendly
The code for sustainable homes as implemented by the Government, is a big move to make homes zero carbon by the end of 2016.
If you’re concerned about how your home is going to rate then triple glazing is an obvious answer for a more eco-friendly house.
One example of a country doing this already is Scandinavia, as all houses now come with Triple Glazing as standard.
Taking home efficiency seriously is going to cost you less in the long run.
And let’s be honest, we all like to make a saving on those heating bills where we can.
What’s in it for you?
Of course aside from the added benefits of a warmer home when you walk through the door, and no more cold shoulders, triple glazing can help to reduce any noise pollution.
So if you live on a busy road or even in a city, you might actually be able to find that peace and quiet you’ve been searching for.
