Conservatory Style Tips for Winter

As one of the less insulated rooms in the house, it’s no surprise that when the cold arrives your conservatory is the first place to become abandoned.

No longer a sun trap to your summer days, instead you’d prefer to curl up on the sofa and close all the doors.

But what a waste of good space and money, when you’ve invested in adding this room to your home.

Admittedly it may not seem as alluring as it did when the sun was shining, but we know that with a few simple adaptations you can still make the most out of this space even in the colder months.

Whilst conservatories are a typical summer space, they can provide a welcome change when you’re in need of a little relaxation at the end of your working day.

With years of experience building conservatories we’ve taken tips from the experts who know about home design and styling so that when we fit your conservatory, you can feel confident that this is going to be a room that’s used all year round.

Follow our guidance below and you’ll be back in your favourite space in no time.

Warm Up

The obvious reason you’re avoiding your conservatory is the cold, so bring back the heat and warm up the room.

Adding electric radiators or even turning the existing ones up a notch will make a dramatic difference in the temperature.

Lighting an array of scented candles will also add another element of warmth and give you a relaxing atmosphere at the same time.

Invest in a big fluffy rug to cover up any cold hardwood or tiled floors, and include extra cushions and throws onto the furniture so that you’ve got a cosy space to curl up in.

The sunshine may have disappeared but we still think almost ‘al fresco’ relaxing will still help you feel more grounded.

Be Bold

It’s traditional for many people to decorate their conservatories in neutral tones that highlight the space, but during winter this can make the room look cold and stark.

Instead of hiding behind beige bring about some colour!

You can create the illusion of warmth with bright tones such as pink, orange or even a nice addition of festive red.

Just by adding more touches of vibrant colours you will make it feel more inviting, and you’ll actually want to spend time in there rather than hide-away from it.

Bring Outside In

Conservatories were originally built to help winter the plants, so why not incorporate this tradition into your home by adding some exotic plants to the space.

Not only will this continue to add colour to the room, but plants have a great way of oxygenating a room and making you feel much more positive during the dark days of winter.

Lighten Up

Thanks to the lack of light during winter, many of us suffer from the SAD condition, which means our bodies are craving the natural boost they get from sunlight.

Of course light still happens during the winter, it’s just a little rarer. So in order to combat your dull mood and give yourself a lift, use your conservatory as your main destination for family meals.

Eating both breakfast and dinner here will ensure that if any light does come about the conservatory will capture it and give you your daily dose of Vitamin D.

Aside from making it a habit, invite guests over for dinner parties and embrace the space as much as possible.

Get Comfortable

You may have purchased extra cushions and throws, but is your furniture in your conservatory comfortable enough for you to flock to with a good book and a glass of red?

Comfort is always key for a successful conservatory, so if you’re furniture has seen better days, or simply doesn’t make you feel relaxed, it’s time to invest in a cosy sofa that you can escape to.

There are lots of offers on during the winter, or you could even wait until the January sales, but make a conscious effort to make your conservatory appealing and you’ll be more inclined to spend time in there.
