The Biggest Interior Trends for 2016

As 2015 fades away with in the wake of New Year celebrations, we take a look ahead at some of the biggest interior trends predicted for 2016. From fresh colour schemes and design ideas to trinkets and furnishings, it’s easy to give your home a make-over for the year ahead.

Hand crafted and unique

Crafting in general is enjoying a moment in vogue. Office jobs spent working on computers and on the ether of the internet don’t fulfil our innate desire to get physical. Knitting, pottery, woodwork and other crafts are expected to see a resurgence in popularity in 2016 and beyond, influencing interior trends as people proudly display their own creations.

The perfection and symmetry of mass-produced ornaments and decorations is out, and lovingly created unique pieces are in. Look for hand-crafted pottery or handwoven textiles produced by local artisans or hidden amongst the clutter in your local charity shop.

Get the look: Dig out your children’s artwork or dust off your inexpert attempt at mastering pottery and make a feature out of it. The imperfections are what make them unique and special!

Organic shapes and textures

Again leaning away from mass-produced items, natural and organic shapes and textures are expected to be big in 2016. Animal pelts, unpolished stone and wood, and natural fibres add a certain medieval style to any interior. Contrast organic items with clean lines and sleek, modern furnishings to make an impact.

Get the look: This look is easy to achieve in the kitchen, with items like organically-shaped chopping boards and fruit bowls that are both affordable and practical. Try displaying naturally beautiful items such as shells, stones, pinecones or driftwood in glass vases in the conservatory where they will catch the light and draw the eye.

Tropical prints

It doesn’t have to be tropical outdoors to feel it indoors. This fun, playful trend will likely see botanical specimens, birds of paradise and exotic animals cavorting on wallpaper, vases and plant pots in 2016. This is a trend that will really let your imagination run wild.

Get the look: Jazz up your living room windows with some funky printed curtains, or look for pillows with bold, brightly coloured prints to inject some vibrancy into your sofas. For a real tropical hit, yucca plants and other palm-like trees in the conservatory will have you feeling like the king of the jungle.

Greenery

Tying all the trends we’ve seen so far in together is the good old-fashioned house plant. A splash of green will brighten up any room, not to mention the added benefits that plants bring to the home as they clean the air and add oxygen. Choose a variety of plants that will thrive best in the right conditions for each room, and get creative with their arrangement. From small table-gardens to hanging plant pots and larger plants in stand-alone pots, there’s no limit to what you can create with house plants.
