Prepare your Home for Summer

With the long evenings here at last we’re all feeling a lot more sociable, and when we’re not spending our days at work, we all want to be making the most of the sunshine.

Whether that’s in the local beer garden or in your own outdoor oasis.

After all, with British Summers you never know quite how long you’ve got until a down pour.

If you didn’t manage to get all your DIY done over the numerous spring bank holiday weekends, then it’s time to give yourself a talking to and set aside a time to get those chores done.

Planning in advance before the social season truly kicks off will set you up for a summer of fun, without any those niggling worries.

We know it can sometimes feel like there’s an overwhelming list of house jobs to be done before you can invite over the friends and relatives to kick off the celebrations, so we’ve come up with some of our top tips for helping you prepare for summer without any hassle.

Time to Fix It

We’ve all got those odd jobs that we’ve been holding off as long as possible, but just biting the bullet can mean you can sit back and relax with that cold glass of Pimms..

From broken draws, cupboards, stiff windows or a leaky conservatory, getting it fixed now will save you money later when it worsens, or ends up hurting someone by accident.

As we’ve done many conservatory repairs over the years, we know that this is one thing that people often leave to the last minute. It gets forgotten about and neglected over the winter months, and then as soon as you want to enjoy it, you’ve found it’s got a leaky roof.

The conservatory can be the perfect place to entertain away for the intense glare of the sunshine, so ensure it’s in tip top condition before you go sending out the invitations.

Don’t forget to also check that your fridge and freezer are both in good working order. There’s nothing worse than a breakdown when you’ve got them full of food and drink for an impending party.

Store Away Winter

If you’re battling with your wardrobe every morning in an attempt to find some summer clothes, then it’s time to put away the winter items to make space for summer.

Heavy coats, boots and thick jumpers should all be bagged up and stored in the attic until the next time they’re needed.

Not only will this give you extra space for some new clothes, it will also clear out the clutter and instantly uplift your mood.

Another idea is to also store away any thick duvets, rugs and curtains that can trap the heat and make rooms feel even warmer than they are.

Decluttering on these items will help give the room more space for natural air flow.

Bring in the Air

Beat the heat and make your house a welcome escape.

Getting the fresh air flowing in the house is essential to making you feel more comfortable when you’re trying to avoid any intense sunshine outside.

If you want to open the doors and windows to get a good airflow but don’t want any pets escaping, then perhaps invest in some of our clever fly screens.

They’re also ideal if you want to keep the bugs out, as even we know that they’re not welcome inside.

Another great addition to enhance your natural air is to purchase some house plants such as succulents and ferns that will help to create better air quality.

if you’re not great with keeping them alive, get some advice from your local garden centre as to how to care for them.

Gut out the Garage

Somewhere beneath all that mess is a lawnmower and a BBQ, but the trouble is you’ve probably spent the past 8 months chucking everything in there and not really taking note of what you may need next.

Hidden under the halloween and christmas decorations lies summer, so it’s time to gut out the garage and get organised.

As awful a job it may, seem take it all out and start again.

Implementing a storage system or even adding wall racking could provide you with more space so that you can keep on top of it, and have somewhere to store your new garden furniture.

Mice are notoriously big fans of hiding away in garages, and this can give you a serious problem come winter. So preparing it now by storing away anything they may ruin, can save the frustrations later on.

Get Ready for Guests

We all love to celebrate the sunshine with our nearest and dearest, and let’s be honest, we all want to be the host with the most. So before you start even thinking about a party you need to prepare for it.

Give the BBQ a thorough clean and get the garden looking lush.

From cutting the grass, removing the weeds, to giving the fence a fresh lick of paint, it can all aid in making it look suitable for the impending party.

If you’ve got distant friends or relatives staying over, it’s perhaps a good idea to see what state the guest bedroom is in. If it hasn’t been used since Christmas it probably needs a good clean, and maybe even a lick of paint.

Freshen it all up and you’ll feel far more in the party spirit than you would if there were jobs looming over your head.

Lighten Up

As you’re about to spend long evenings in the garden entertaining, don’t forget to purchase some lights so that you and your guests aren’t left in the dark when the sun sets.

Candles, solar powered lights and even fairy lights can all be bought for a very reasonable price, and they can really enhance the atmosphere when the party is starting to die down.

We know how important it is to make the most of your home in the summer, so prepare now and you’ll give yourself a better chance of enjoying it. Whether you would like some advice on our fly screens, or the window and door repairs that we offer, contact our friendly team today.
