Common Window Problems and How to Fix Them

Don’t worry we’re not about to let you loose with some DIY advice, but with over 15 years of experience in the glazing industry we know a thing or two about how to maintain your windows, and ensure that all year round they offer you the same security and protection as they did when they were first installed.

As the seasons change the introduction of more cool air and winds will expose weaknesses in your windows, so rather than ignoring the problem until it becomes a huge issue, it’s best to identify, act and resolve it as soon as possible.

After all, the best way to save your money is by fixing a problem as soon as it occurs, that way you won’t be paying out a big cost when the issue snowballs out of control.

Draughts

We all know that during the winter months there is nothing worse than a cold draught to cut through the warmth your radiators are trying so hard to create.

Not only a drain on the energy efficiency of your home, draughts can make for an uncomfortable home that you won’t enjoy relaxing in.

So rather than bundling on the layers, or turning up your heating, identify where the draught is coming from in your windows.

Single glazed windows are common culprits of draughts and cold spots in the home, so it may be worth investing in double or triple glazed windows if they’re in need of updating.

However if you already have these installed it may simply be the sealant has become disrupted over time and may need adding.

You can do this yourself with any silicone from a hardware store, but if you want to get rid of this problem for good, we can help to re-install your windows with the innovation of Thermo Seal technology.

This incredible tape can be applied in minutes, much faster than a traditional silicone gun, leaving your windows more secure, and any noise pollution dramatically reduced.

So if you don’t fancy getting messy with a silicone gun, give us a call.

Foggy Glass

The science behind double glazing is simple. Formed from two panes of glass sealed together, the gap left between them enables the warm air to stay in and the cold air to stay out.

However, if the seal is broken on the glass, it can result in the window misting or fogging up.

This could be for a number of reasons, from how it’s been fitted, to how it has been manufactured.

There are a few options to consider if this is happening to you, so it’s mainly down to the budget you have available and how long you’re going to be staying in your existing home.

You could simply replace the seal to fix the problem in the short term, but the chances are that this problem is most likely down to the age of the windows. Therefore it could be more worthwhile updating your windows to new double glazed or even the latest triple glazed window solutions.

Broken Glass

Whether there’s been an accident or an attempted burglary, broken glass is dangerous and unsightly and you will need to get it fixed as soon as possible, especially in the cold winter months.

Remove your window sash and take it to your local glazers or just give us a call.

We’ve had many customers who panic about this situation, and it’s no surprise as your home can feel vulnerable.

Unfortunately it will be inconvenient if you have a broken window as it’s best not to leave your home unattended whilst it can be so easily entered.

The good news is that it doesn’t take long to fix and does not cost as much as replacing the entire windows.

Window repairs is something we know can be frustrating but with our team on board you’ll soon be back to your normal lifestyle in no time.

Condensation

If you’re currently pulling your hair out at how to fix the condensation appearing on your windows then it may be time to do some serious thinking.

There are a few factors that you should perhaps consider, the use of the room, the temperature inside and outside and of course ventilation.

If your home is prone to condensation than investing in a dehumidifier will go along way in easing the problem, however you should perhaps consider the performance of your current windows.

Getting more energy efficient windows such as double or triple glazed can help to reduce condensation as the internal glass pane would be warmer.

Unfortunately if you’re experiencing condensation between your existing double glazed windows then this will mean the seal has been broken and they will need replacing.

Security

Your windows are the weakest points of your home for any potential intruders, especially if the locks and latches are not 100% secure.

To ensure that you feel safe in your own home, and that it’s fully protected when you’re not there, always check the state of the locks when you do any odd jobs around the house.

Normal wear and tear can begin to make them weak, and if they’ve been exposed to any water, rust can make them even more fragile to destruction.

However these items can easily be replaced by searching your local DIY store.

As long as the replacement parts match that of your existing fittings there will be no problems in attaching the new ones.

Although there’s often a quick fix for most of these problems, it’s always best to consider the effects it will have on your home in the long run.

If you need to replace your windows or simply need help with a problem that you’re experiencing, call our team today to arrange an appointment.
